THIS elongated X Factor montage about a down-on-his luck theatre owner putting on a singing competition relies far too lazily on jokes from various animals singing ill-fitting songs (an elephant sings ‘Hallelujah’) rather than any real level of plot.

Matthew McConaughey and Reese Witherspoon and gang give requisite gusto, but, in my opinion, The Muppets have done this story before and better.
Audiences demand more from our CGI movies nowadays – especially if you’re the same studio that made £800,000 from The Minions 2 years ago and even more so when it is trying to snap at the heels of Zootropolis, Kubo & the Two Strings and Moana.
This feels very much like ‘movie by numbers’ – and I don’t mean the Elton John kind.

Director Garth Jennings is a genius, has a great eye and usually hits the mark – for instance when creating the incredible ‘Coffee and TV’ video for Blur – that 3 minute music video featuring a person in a milk carton costume had more heart and soul in it than can be seen anywhere in this feature length.
An adequate film to sate a rainy Sunday but not a whole lot else.
Based on American Idol, Sing becomes a bit too much like American Idol – all froth no coffee.
Having said that – my kids absolutely loved it.
